Custodians of Our Heritage

For generations, locals and residents have been the custodians of this heritage. They have witnessed first-hand how the coastal lands, particularly around Ballyhealy, Seaview, and the intricate dune systems, have begun to show signs of degradation. This vulnerability is not new; the OPW has long noted that Kilmore Quay is highly prone to erosion. The Wexford County Development Plan 2022-2028 identifies Kilmore Quay as a Coastal Landscape Character Unit (LCU), noting that this area is sensitive to pressure from tourism and residential development. This is consistent with Fáilte Ireland’s tourism strategy, which has found that visitors are attracted to authentic experiences and unspoiled landscapes like those found in Kilmore Quay.

A growing concern within the community is the impact of human activity on the landscape and its wildlife.

Since COVID-19, instances of fires being lit on the dunes and rubbish being left behind around the village have become more frequent, putting the delicate flora and fauna at risk.

In and around the village, several developments have been insensitive to the area’s beauty and valuable heritage. For instance, old walls have been demolished and not replaced, new constructions have been built on historic sites, and unfinished projects stand as eyesores, all of which detract from the village’s natural charm and rich history.

It was from this shared concern and deep-rooted sense of topophilia that the Kilmore Quay Conservation Group was formed. A collective of locals and residents, the group came together with a clear and urgent purpose: to actively enhance Kilmore Quay’s heritage while protecting the natural environment that makes this place so special. We are a community-led initiative committed to safeguarding our flora, fauna, and the very places that hold a sense of home and history for us all.

Our mission is to ensure that the unique and authentic beauty of Kilmore Quay remains for generations to come.
