Built Heritage of Kilmore Quay

Evidence of built heritage in Kilmore Quay dates back to Norman times. Ballyteige Castle stands as testament to the lasting effect of the Norman Invasion where the invaders were said to become ‘more Irish than the Irish themselves’.  Much construction happened during the 1800s with the development of the harbour and building of schools in Kilturk and Chapel Garden and St Peter’s Church in Kilmore Quay.  The village expanded. Homes were thatched cottages which evolved into the unique vernacular architecture the village is still known for today.
