Kilmore Quay Conservation Group’s Signage Proposal (Protection of Ballyteige Burrow dunes) was born out of growing concern among Kilmore Quay residents regarding visible coastal erosion, particularly the expanding “blow-outs” on the Ballyteige Burrow dunes.
These environmental shifts, coupled with the devastating flooding of 2021 and the ongoing threat of future inundation, prompted the Kilmore Quay Conservation Group to host an information event at the Stella Maris Centre last October. By bringing together experts and local groups to discuss the importance of the dunes, the need for proactive protection became clear; this signage proposal serves as our vital first step in raising awareness on the dunes’ vulnerability and their role as a natural coastal defence.
KQCG met with NPWS last September 2025. Following their recommendations, the group developed a comprehensive signage strategy which has since been presented to the Directors of the Kilmore Quay Community Development Association (trustees of the community land) and the Environmental Department of Wexford County Council (WCC). Both bodies have expressed strong support for the initiative.
We believe this signage is essential because it shifts the narrative from passive restriction to active stewardship.
By replacing outdated warnings with educational guidance, we aim to foster a culture of local pride, reduce human-driven damage to the Special Area of Conservation, and ultimately preserve the integrity of the dunes as a critical barrier for the entire village.
